Abstract

The layers, allocated to the Early Upper Pleistocene (Middle Palaeolithic) of Artenac, contain abundant lithic and bone assemblages, as well as two Neanderthal skull fragments. The amphibians and reptiles fauna consist of : Salamandra salamandra (Salamandridae), Pelobates cf. fuscus (Pelobatidae), Pelodytes punctatus (Pelodytidae), Bufo bufo and B. calamita (Bufonidae), Rana temporaria (Ranidae), Lacerta cf. viridis and few taxa of small lacertids (Lacertidae), Anguis fragilis (Anguidae), cf. Coluber viridiflavus, Coronella austriaca (Colubridae) and opera aspis (Viperidae). The herpetofauna may be contemporaneous of coolest and moistest temperate climatic conditions, and shows a relatively opened environment of mosaic pattern, with damp meadow and forest areas broad-leaved trees and conifers. P. fuscus underlines continental climatic conditions mitigate by the occurrence of thermophile species. Proportion and distribution of the species in the stratigraphical sequence allows hypothesis concerning minor climatic variations to be advanced.
